Default Leaking door heads up

Hi All,

Here is a heads up in case any other 2000+ Bonnie'* start leaking. The passinger side front door on mine started to leak the last time it rained, and totally soaked the carpet and some papers I had on the floor. I finally got around to bringing it to the dealer today and they said it was the deflector inside the door. Unfortunately they had to special order the part so its not fixed yet. Lucky me its supposed to rain later today and all day tomorrow.

I looked at your other post and it does sound like what happened to mine. Mine is actually at the dealership today because the parts finally came in, it took two weeks for the parts to come in! It rained every day last week and I don't have a garage to park in so the carpet is really soaked now and starting to smell.

There will be no charge to fix mine because its still under warranty. I looked at the ticket from when the dealership diagnosed the problem and it looks like the deflector, part number 25742368, has a unit price of $36.45. And they told me it would take about 2 hour to replace since they have to take the door completely apart to replace the deflector. I'll try to get more info from them about this problem when I pick up the car this evening.

Hope this helps.

Hey Mario
Tell them to replace your carpets too...or at least get them to clean it. A defective part was the cause of damage to another part of the car. They should do something about that :?

Just got back from picking my car up. They did clean the carpets so it smells better , but when I got in my car to drive home I noticed that the passenger side door that they fixed didn't look quite right. I took a closer look at it and the door panel wasn't completely on . I went back to the service mgr and he apologized and brought the car back into the shop and a few minutes later they had it fixed right this time. There are no new squeeks or rattles from the door so I guess they put everything back where it was supposed to go.

Overall I have not been too pleased with the service dept at this dealership, but they are much closer than the dealership where I bought my car. I think in the future though I will be making the hour drive back to where I bought my car.

Mario,
I hear ya man, you have to watch some of these dealership auto technicians very closely. When they disturb something like that (an interior door panel), it always seems that re-fitting the panel is never exactly right unless new retainer clips, hardware etc. is used. Attention to detail can be pretty non-existent sometimes with these techs. Do you know exact location of the source of the leak?

Yes I could actually see the water coming in when I was driving. It was coming into the car right under where the speaker is in the door. Also after it rained and I opened the door there would be water sitting on top of the weatherstripping and sill plate on the body of the car. Since it was coming in so close to the speaker I was kind of worried about it getting ruined or shorted out.

The service mgr told me that there is always some water passing through the inside of the door and the deflector is supposed to channel the water away from the interior of the car. But he couldn't tell me how mine went bad 8 months after I bought it. I hope it is not a design issue and I will have to go through this every eight or nine months! From other posts it seems like a trunk leak is something I also have to look for....so far no trunk leak yet for me.

I realize you didn't have to pay for it due to warranty, but I bought mine used and am without warranty. Any idea how much that is going to run me?

uirx,
With labor costs running about $65.00/hr, and the deflector cost of $36.45, that would bring the total bill to approximately $166.45 before tax. I think these dealerships work to a certain standard flat rate. Their flat rate book may estimate 2hrs to change out this deflector plate passenger door. They may actually do the whole job in 1.25 hrs verses the 2 hrs called out by the book. You, the unwary customer will get charged 2 hrs labor flat rate + material cost + tax. Of course this is all speculative, you definitely should talk to a service rep, and since you are already armed with knowledge that it may be a failure, or defect with this deflector you'll have an idea as to whether or not they're giving you the bs. Good luck with it.
markwb p.*. labor rates vary according to regions etc, but they are all generally $60 to 70/hr I think.

Urix,

I would have to agree with Markwb. $36.45 for the parts plus sales tax whatever that happens to be in MI, plus two hours labor. I think the labor rate here is about $65.00 per hour too. The billing for the book rate is also true. They are allowed to bill the book rate for the job even though it may not take them that long to do it. Since you have already been billed $115.00 to fix the trunk, which is much less complicated to do, I think it will probably run you $150.00 - $180.00

Hope this helps some.
