Default Hard Starting '01 3800 Gen II Non-SC

Brother has this problem on 2001 Impala LS. Happened out of clear blue. Engine will not start on 1st try. Always starts on second try. Once running idles very smoothly. Full power acceleration too. Never stalls. No codes. This happens on both cold and hot engine.

One other thing. Just tried opening throttle plate to full with accelerator peda on first start-up.. Will start first attempt almost every time. With no accelerator pedal, back to 2nd try starting woes.

Most likely problem? Fuel pressure leaking down is my guess. Anyone else? On these cars how do I check fuel pressure?

Thanks

To check the fuel pressure, remove the engine cover and locate the fuel lines, look for the fuel pressure service connection at the front passenger side of the engine. Connect the gauge here. The gauge should read between 53 and 59psi on a vin K with the ignition on but engine off. Once the system is charged watch it for 5 min with the ignition off, the pressure should not drop more than 2 psi, if it does the fuel pump is shot.

Thanks for the info. Does this require a special fitting? Seems like on my old '92 SSEi I used my vacuum/pressure gauge with a direct rubber tube connection. Is the connection some type of valve such as on the A/C?

Gm lists a special 'J___#' but many tool supply stores have them (autozone, pepboys?). You might be able to rent one as well?
And yes the fitting is simillar in design to an a/c fitting, slip on quick disconnect type.

Hard-starting added another symptom. Engine finally started intermittant stalling. Ended up being fuel pressure regulator. $72 DIY repair. Thought you'd like to know.

You should call Pontiac'* Customer Service and tell them you had to replace it. There was a recall on the L36 FPR'* a few months ago, I don't remember if 2K+'* were involved with it or not.
