Default Random Stalling and MAF?

Hey guys,

Well, I managed to get just over 4000 miles of pure enjoyment out of the Bonnie since the purchase back in July, but it looks like the honeymoon is finally over. At least for a few days.

It'* a 2000 SSEi, 61K, all stock. Previous owner had it serviced at the dealer since they bought it at 18K, and I have all service records -- Other than routine maintenance, the powertrain hasn't been touched, meaning I've got 10 years on all the original sensors, plugs, etc.

It'* been running like a dream up until today. Ran some errands, no probs. Parked the car, and left again in about 20 minutes. All appeared normal until I got a little heavy with the accelerator foot... under moderate acceleration, it stalled. No dash warning lights, SES, nothing. Pulled it over and it fired right back up. Ran good, so I headed out on my way. Did some moderate accelerations again and it was fine. A couple miles down the road, it wanted to die again while climbing a hill. Backed off the gas and it came back to life. It'* acting like fuel starvation or flooding on an old carbureted car. I can get it to choke up under heavy acceleration almost every time, and occasionally it wants to die under light to moderate throttle. It'* only stalled that first time... the other times I can sense it and if I back off the accelerator entirely, it will stumble back to life.

Drove it home and plugged in the scanner, even though it never indicated a problem on the dash SES light. With the car not running, the scanner says it'* a "P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Current Low Input". I cleared the code and started the car and it stumbled a bit before smoothing out at idle... same code came up after a couple seconds. Pulled up the live data on the scanner and for MAF lb/min at idle it shows a reading of zero. (What should it be at idle? - just wondering.)

So to all you experts out there, does this sound like typical MAF sensor problems? Figured I would check before I run out and start throwing parts at it. Gotta save some $$ for window regulators and wheel bearings, when the time comes.

Thanks for the great info, Dan.

The sensor looked fine... very clean, actually. I went ahead and cleaned it but problems did not improve. I found a donor car at a local wrecking yard and grabbed the MAF sensor off it... just what the doctor ordered. No more DTCs being thrown, and runs smoooooooth. Good times.

Sometimes they simply fail in the inside.
