Default Lost tach, speedo, and compass

Hey Gang,

I recently started having some funky stuff happen to my '02 SSEi. Last week, I happened to be driving under normal conditions when all of a sudden my tach and speedo dropped out. I also lost my compass heading, turn signals, and the ability to use any of the buttons on my DIC. The display keeps reading "Calibrate Compass" along with that annoying chime every 10-15 seconds. A couple things struck me as being odd about this one. 1: The HUD is still displaying my speed. 2: Several times since then, the problem has cleared itself and all has returned to normal (only temporarily though).

I have skimmed over the 2000-2005 and Everything Electrical forums, but haven't found anything pertaining to my symptoms.

Has anyone ever heard of these?

The Head-Up display doesn't derive information from the instrument cluster. These are two, completely independant devices. Speed information is fed to BOTH of these via the VSS line.

I had a theory right up until you said you lost your turn signals. Most other information is provided over the class 2 data bus (speed, tach, etc). You may need to have your car scanned for codes as a first step. This may be as simple as a connection problem. Has your cluster ever been removed to your knowledge? There are five clips that hold it into to dash. Try pressing firmly all around the edges and see if you hear anything "snap" into place.

There is the possibility of a poor connection. Try the above first and let us know how it works for you.

ddalder,

I have actually had a check engine light on for the last couple of weeks. I ran by the parts store and the scanner showed a failing airflow sensor. I'm planning on replacing that this weekend. Is there any chance that could be causing my symptoms?

The problems you have described are far too widespread to be caused by this. Obviously this needs attention but it shouldn't cause anything beyond your Service Engine Soon light being illuminated.
