Recently had a professional installer try to put a Alpine 6 disc changer on my 2000 SLE. It is the type that sends the signal thru an FM radio channel. After dozens of attempts and every filter made, he still cannot stop a whinning sound that comes over the speakers. We even tried a different brand of Changer and still got the whinning. Factory Alpine reps suggested several different actions, all failed. They claim that it is something that Pontiac has in its cars. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any suggestions? The installer claims that you cannot disturb the wires and ribbons going directly to the radio because of the computer tie ins that the radio has with the car. Again, any help? The installer worked for GM for 17 years and claims he never had this problem before.

Well I have a custom system in my 01 ssei, I didn't hook up a 6disc changer so I can't help you on that. My installer did pull out the Bose/Monsoon radio out. I was there it is a ribbon that plugs in. My Alpine now fits nicely with no problems.
Now couple things though, I did lose all my door chimes and can no longer talk back/hear the wonderful people at Onstar. Didn't plan on re-subscribing the previous owners plan, it'* like $350 a year. I've got a cell phone. I can't really think of anything else that a lost. Could of kept the Onstar hooked up but would of had to buy some harness for $250 and hook up an extra speaker and mic, not worth it to me.

My installer did say that when everything was done on my car, he said he had some crazy feedback/distoration/alternator whine like your talking about when he started. He told me he had to go through all the wiring/grounds to fix the problem.

I also got the Alpine/gm steering wheel module, keeps the steering wheel controls for like $85 I think. Also reminds me that I DID lose the radio station # on the H.U.D. Oh well, Hi-Fidelity sound is well worth the price. Stereos are my passion.

I have a 2002 SE, WITHOUT the Bose/Integrated Radio. No ribbon cable, or dual install harness was required for my vehicle, but when I listen to the radio, cd, or XM at low volumes there is some noticeable engine whine. A friend of mine also has done some after market car stereo work on his 1999 Silverado 1500 and he has whine too. My install includes an amp and a sub and that may be part of the problem. When I have the speakers replaced in the car I plan on having the install shop completely re-wire everything car stereo related, I have a feeling since I am using factory wire for the sound distribution that is where my wine is coming from...

I too, still have a little bit of whine through my front left Tweeter still. Only happens when car is running, lost points at my competition but still WON Anyways, we swaped out the speakers and then the crossovers too, still there, next swaped and ran better RCA'*, still there, now they ordered a different amp too, haven't swaped that yet. So It could be try that some GM cars will always have a little bit of engine whine.

Just curious, what speakers are the whines coming out of all those listed, Same as me maybe, pass tweeter?

It could be as simple as the ground & power wire at the amp. When I was installing a RF amp, the power & ground wire werent touching but they were close enough it caused a whining noise. So since that day on I use wire loom to cover everything that comes in contact with metal. Since then no more whining noises. Oh and I have a checklist of how to check where the whine is coming from if anybody wants to see it. I didnt make it got it off of the net from Car Audio.

The loom is a good idea.. it might be dirty ground ( as so the pros tell me ).. try hookin it up straight to the battery to help filter ground noise and possibly insulating it with some electro magnatic dampeners cover (forgotwhat they are called now ) around the wires for the power and/or speaker wires...in my old car ( with a decent stereo before it got broken into ) everytime I use my 2 way radio ( 900Mhz trunked ) everytime I transmit.. it distorts the **** out of the stereo..

in the 2002 the battery is located behind the back seat. Both the power and ground to the amp are running directly from the battery now.
