Default New Monroe Max Airs but rear riding low and stiff

I got the shop to replace the stock shocks with new Max Air Monroes and new mounts because I was getting a clunking noise from the passenger rear.

Now that the Monroes are in the clunk occurs but less frequently and less loudly so it'* probably a driver side loose end-link adjuster arm I know needs to be replaced.

The new ride is quite stiff (stiffer than I like but knew that the Max Air are designed more for support than comfort).

What bothers me the most right now is the rear of my car looks lower than most any other Bonnevilles I see around. I do briefly hear the ELC air pressure check after start-ups. Also, while getting the golf shoes on and sitting on the edge of the open trunk I was surprised to feel the rear end lower as much as it did.

I searched for ELC here but most problems were the opporsite of what I am experiencing. Anyone have any ides what might be going on? So I can point the mechanic (who installed the shocks) in the right direction?

He possibly did not reconnect the ELC sensor.

Also, have them check the air lines to make certain they were installed properly and not blocked. There should not be a ride height difference.

What brand shock mounts were used, do you know? We had another member have a clunk with new Monroe mounts.

When you change the rear struts, an ELC adjustment is very likely to be needed. Procedure is in Techinfo.

The 2000+ have rear shocks rather than struts so the normal ride height is not affected as much by replacement; and I don't believe the sensor is set up for adjustment. Did you make any changes after posting this thread?

Thanks guys,

Archon, no I didn't make any adjustments to the linkage for ride height like I was asking about in that post. It was suggested to me in a PM that cornering performance (safety issue?) might be affeced with the increased rearend height. Not sure if that'* really an issue but enough of a concern I guess that I haven't gone ahead with it yet. If I can't correct the rear end height issue through a fix to anything found wrong with the ELC or line blockage I will re-consider it.

The mounts were not Monroes. They were after markets that I picked up at Parts Source. Forget the brand name right now but I somehow doubt those would be the problem unless they failed immediately...

You may need to replace the height adjuster if you can't find another cause for the sagging. Have you done any measurements?

Keep the mounts in mind. I bought replacements for mine which clunked almost as bad as the bad one that had the shock shaft go right through it. Some of them do not isolate very well, even when new.

measurements? Do you mean top of tire to fender rim? It'* less than the frontend top of tire to fender rim. I'll try to get a picture of the car on level ground.

How would one check to see if the new mount is defective -- just from the clunk sound or are there visual tell tale signs?

Also, is there a way to check the air pressure within the shock to see if it'* getting air?

I'd suggest measuring the height from ground to the body right behind the front wheel, and then right in front of the rear wheel. Then we can get an idea on how far off it may be.

I put one of the original mounts back on my car, and that side is now quiet. The driver'* side still has the replacement, and still makes noise when hitting a sharp bump. I could not tell any difference between the replacement and the original just by looking at them...only by the noise generated when installed. I haven't replaced the other, so I don't have a recommendation for you at this point as to what a good after-market mount is.

I'm not aware of a way to check for the pressure sent to the shock, however if you pull the connection off (key off so the compressor doesn't start) you should get a pretty good rush of air out of the shock.
