Default Anyone else'* trunk leak????

Well, I was going to install my sub and amp this weekend, but upon investigating the trunk, me and my buddy found that it has apparently been leaking, quite badly too. Theres even a puddle of water on the spare tire. He works at a body shop, so I'm going to let him take my car this week to hopefully find and solve the problem. I was just curious if this was common among other '00 and ups. And if so, where does it normally leak from? I've noticed my spoiler doesnt sit flushly against the trunk lid, could that possibly be the culprit? I just want to fix the leak before putting my amp in the trunk. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Joe.

You could be correct. I've heard trunk leaks may originate from the spoiler mounting bolt seals. Yep, my 2001 leaks. I did not know it until recently. I've never noticed excessive moisture in my trunk but when I was checking air pressure in my spare tire I noticed about an 1-1/2" of water in the bottom of the spare tire pan. Can you believe that? Wouldn't you think I would have noticed the sloshing around in there. It looked like it had been in there for at least a year! Unbelievably there was not a speck of rust anywhere. I thought about drilling a 1/8" hole in the bottom of the pan to drain future water incursions but thought better of that. I'm going to take a hose to the trunk area and see if I can find the leak. Mine looks like it may be coming from one of the the spoiler bolts where it attaches to the underside of the trunk hatch. Wouldn't you think I would notice water leaks in there after a rain? I've opened that trunk a thousand times and have never noticed a leak.

Joe, Assuming you haven't noticed any wet areas on the trunk floor carpet the problem may be a leak through a body seam. If you take all the interior panels out of the trunk, have some one pour water over trunk lid while you're inside car looking through the pass thru. You should then be able to localize where water is entering.

Yup, mine leaked. Pulled up the trunk seal around the bottom of the trunk and sealed it up with some RTV. No more leak. I determined this is where it was entering from by simply pulling up the trunk mat and seeing water spots underneith. This actually flowed water all the way up and filled my driver'* rear footwell. You could see water spots on the sheet metal in the trunk leading all the way to the back of the front seat. No problems since sealing it up.

All of that reminds me. My friend had a trunk leak from a body seam where the trunk and fender seams came together, left side toward the back. A little RTV took care of that, too.

Default leak

Sometimes its just adjusting the trunk lid to come down tighter against the seal or its snow from the winter that spilled into the trunk when opening.
My 96 had a wet spare tire and I found that when the snow melted thats where it ended up. It could not evaporate. Had to drill 3 nickel size holes in the spare tire cover and all is dry now.
