Gas Gauge problems??

Well, I just changed mine last nite in an hour and that was while watching NCIS out in the shop. Piece of cake!!! Got the part from GM parts direct for $22 and binga banga boom~
I watched the Youtube Vids that Hans did and with those it'* truly simple.
I Had a lof of crud and rust around the locking ring so I wired brushed all that, kept the shop vac handy. As I beat the ring around more and more stuff loosened up. more vac- One thng I did, I left the line attached until I got the ring loosed. I didn't want to take a chance of stuff getting in the lines while I was doing all that banging and beating.
I would suggest taking an old screwdriver and putting a V notch in the blade to help hold on the locking ring. It'* a plastic tank and I could easily see someone driving it right through the tank if they weren't careful. I have a bud who would do exactly that. He'll destroy a quarter panel changing a marker light-some guys just don't have the finesse.
Oh, and it worked and solved the issue!

Thanks for the update Dan. Feels good, doesn't it? Not to mention the money you saved.
I put off doing mine for the longest time thinking it was a big repair. When I finally got around to doing it the job took less than an hour. LIke I mentioned to you earlier, the only tricky part is getting that lock ring off. If you are patient, and alternate hitting each side it comes off pretty easily. I really like your idea of the notched screwdriver, but I would use a brass rod or some other material that wouldn't produce a spark when striking metal (for obvious reasons).
What can we help you fix next?

You are correct. I disconnected my hoses before banging on the lock ring to get more access to both sides of the ring. Now that I know how to get that ring off I would do it like you did (ring first, hoses second). I still am nervous about banging metal to metal next to my gas tank ... particularly with me in the trunk at the time. I didn't say my fear was logical.

Hey guys, what is the part number from GM? I saw the video but couldnt catch the Part Number.
I would like the Tristar part but its 89.00. If the GM part is 22.00 and lasts like another 100,000 miles, I may be dead by then so it will work for me. Thanks for all the information. I thought of the brass drift also as I do gunsmithing and use brass drifts and such for many things. And also thought of the "V" notch in the screwdriver thing.
