Default the elephant steering noise

my car went into the shop today. it came back with a quote of $1200 to have the steering column replaced because of an elephant-like sounding noise. i posted about this a while back. many of you responded with the probablity of the intermediate cam shaft. well that was replaced a few days ago for $300 because they thought that was the problem. but it wasnt.

my dads response?: its a common problem on alot of bonnevilles and its all over the place, its not a safety issue so its not worth replacing for $1200.

my response: could it be something else? is there something else i could do to get rid of the sound that scares the **** out of my passengers

If it was not the clunking sound of the intermediate steering shaft (listen to the video posted in the sticky at the top of the 2000+ section) it could the power steering pressure hose. There'* a TSB on it and is discussed some here.

I had to have the steering gear (steering rack) replaced in mine because of this noise. Does yours sound like this?

I've seen a new rack on ebay for as little as $225 but expect to pay around $350.

I was trying to make it do it, you know how that goes. It would get deeper and louder at times.

I bought a warranty when I bought the car a few months back. So it was only a 50$ deductible for me. That sounded like the retail price they said it would have been if I didn't have one. There is a TSB for this too (not that it matters if your out of warranty). Here is the thread I did when I found the problem with my car. I posted the info the dealer gave my about it in my thread, look at the 8th post http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...521&highlight=

Funny thing is, a few that posted having this problem said it came back later.
