Default SES Light came on today....

.....so I went to Autozone and had them scan it. Some wierdo code came up on it and the little book there said this: Purge or Vent Solenoid. The guy there said it was for the intake manifold and that I would have to get the part from the dealer because he has no way to get it. Anyone here have an idea as to if I can fix this myself and is it hard to get to or do? Also I called the local Pontiac Dealer and they want 22.68 for the part. Thanks in advance! Brad

You should be able to replace it yourself. The directions are:
1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector and the hoses from the EVAP purge valve.

3. Bend the tab on the purge valve mounting bracket in order to remove the EVAP purge valve.
4. Remove the EVAP purge valve from the bracket.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Bend the tab on the purge valve mounting bracket in order to install the valve.
2. Install the EVAP purge valve.

3. Connect the hoses and the electrical connector to the EVAP purge valve.
4. Install the fuel injector sight shield.

It'* on the back side of the intake to left of the EGR and PCV valves as you're facing the car from the front.

Brad, if you could possibly get the code, that would help. The purge valve solenoid & the vent valve solenoid are two different solenoids. Which one needs to be replaced or is failing is just a guess at this point. It is also possible that neither need replacement and that a line associated with the EVAP system is leaking or a blockage may exist. It is all contingent on the code for which direction to go while troubleshooting this problem
