Default Check Gas Cap with P0440 Evap Emission System Code on my

:?: 2001 Bonne SSEi. It is not the gas cap or fuel pressure sensor. I don't see or smell any gas leak. The Evap System test runs at random so it is extremely expensive to have the dealer troubleshot it. It is not covered by my extended warranty either. The dealer said my fuel pressure sensor had bad voltage readings so they replaced it. The code came back 3 or 4 days later.
Although the canister hose pushed in about a half inch and made a clicking sound, seating it didn't help me. The code came back about seven days later. Started replacing parts and luckily, replacing the first part, the purge valve, located on the engine looks like it corrected the problem. I have been code free for six days now. 6/10/06. Thanks guys, for all your help. I appreciate it very much.

Beyond looking for the obvious electrical connection or a wire that is pinched etc, and the Evap vacuum lines being good..hmmmmm

You should be able to get the dealer to cut you a deal since they misdiagnosed the problem to begin with.

Dave, can you put "2001 SSEi" in your signature?

You say it'* not the gas cap, but is that because it was replaced? That'* usually the typical failure for that code. I personally suspect a leak somewhere preventing the tank from holding pressure.

Also, check around the top of the filler tube. They can get rusty and prevent even a new cap from sealing properly. Clean that off, and make certain that you don't "top off the tank" when getting gas. That has been known to cause varying problems.

My 0440 code was ultimately resolved when I discovered cracks in my vacuum line connectors. A free diagnosis for this:

- visually and physically inspect all your vacuum lines, especially the ones leading to your evap./charcoal cannister
- inspect the rubber connectors at each vacuum line connection
- be aware that there are even vacuum lines leading all the way back to you gas filler neck (tough to follow, but do those last).

archon,

Right on! That was my problem. Solved it by not adding that extra few squirts once the gas pump auto shuts-off. I forgot once and topped up. Yep, got the darn Check Gas Cap alarm for about 100 miles.

I wish I could find a Haynes manual on the vehicle.

My DIC appears to be giving me flakey avg gas mileage readings now.

I think it is an electrical problem.

Does the Evap System have its own voltage regulator?

If so, do you know where it is located?

Thanks for you assistance with my problem.

I appreciate it very much.
Dave, I don't want to steer you wrong and am not 100% sure where they put the
evap. cannister in 2001, but the typical location has been on the driver'*
side front near or under the airbox. You should be able to follow the
vacuum lines from your throttle body to the cannister. It will usually have
the purge valve on the top of the cannister also.

The purge valve is another common area of failure, so be sure to check it
out also.

As far as the dealer comment that your system is holding pressure; they
either meant that it is holding vacuum or they were talking about the fuel
system, which is a pressure system.

As far as the Haynes manual goes, I recommend spending the extra $$ for a
Factory Service Manual (FSM) for these cars. The Haynes I have is good for
basic maintenance only and fairly useless for diagnosis. FSM'* are well
worth the money for anyone who does their own work. One correct diagnosis
and repair and it will more than pay for itself, IMO. Here'* an FSM for
yours that isn't too bad (cost), but you may be able to do better on ebay:

http://www.factoryautomanuals.com/pr...0&cat=0&page=1

Also, since I don't have the manual for your year, the best I can do on your
electrical issue, at this time, is to hope that one of our resident experts with specific knowledge of the 2001 system pipes in. We have a good mix of expertise on the
site and we will muddle through getting you the help you need.

Sorry I couldn't be a more specific help yet, but we'll get you there.

How long is the emissions system warrantied? Isn't there a federal requirement on the car'* being emissions free for longer than the 3-36 that the auto manufacturer wants to warranty the stuff?

Dave,
You may have give us a good clue here with the mention of the problem occurring only since the recently fuel filter swap. The filter being part of the fuel system, and the code you now get are also part of it.

Since filters are fairly low cost, I would suggest considering a swap out of that filter. However... when changing a filter, one notices there are three lines going to the front of the car. Fuel supply, fuel return and evap line that is bascially a vacuum line connection. Being that the code points a to the evap, give that evap line a check. Maybe it was disconnected to gain more room or got nicked out of visible sight when the fitler was replaced.

I wouldn't crawl under the car w/o a filter in hand to swap if you don't find anything wrong with the vacuum line, however if you find something wrong then you are all set and could return the filter.
