Weird sunroof issue

Default Weird sunroof issue

Good morning everyone,

I own a 2000SSEi and have an issue that started the other day.

As soon as I turn my key to on, the sunroof automatically opens. I can stop it, but it wont close right away. I have to fiddle with the switch for a while before it will close and if it'* raining I will get soaked before it will close again.

I tried pulling the wires to the switch and it still does it.

I ended up pulling the fuse in the rear block to stop it, but now I have no interior lights and the wife will hate that....

Any insight?

It could be the relay. The switch could be good and the relay bad. That would explain why you can disconnect the switch and the sunroof still opens on it'* own.

There are a very limited number of components associated with the sunroof. There is the switch (which if you disconnected and the problem remained can virtually be eliminated). There is the sunroof control module that uses input from the switch and controls the motor accordingly. Lastly (as far as any electric/electronic components are concerned) is the motor. This does have a limit sensor in it which may be a possible culprit. The control module is, from my understanding, quite expensive. There are very specific procedures for replacing motor. I would not recommend this unless you have the FSM.

If I understand you correctly, when you start your car the roof opens. Once it is closed, it remains closed until you shut off and start your car again?

Thanks for the replies,

Yes, if I turn the key to on, it opens. And it will do it everytime, and will remain closed until I start the car again once I get it to close.

I can stop it if I wanted, all I have to do is push the switch to close and it will stop but won't actually close unless I fiddle with the switch for a few min.

Is there a relay or is the control module the only other option if the switch is bad? Well, other than the actual motor but that seems to be working normally, something is telling it to do what it'* doing.

When you pulled the wires to the switch, I assume you removed the connector entirely? Also, does the switch FEEL different (excessive play, reduced travel, otherwise sloppy) as compared to before the problem started?

The only relay in the fuse box that is associated with the sunroof is the RAP (Retained Accessory Power) relay. This however has no direct control over the motor. It supplies power to the sunroof control module along with any other accessories in your car that use RAP. These include interior lights and cigarette lighter circuits to name just a couple. Sunroof motor control is exclusively by way of the sunroof control module.

Since removing the fuse I'm sure you will have noticed that once your key is turned off, many things that would work until you opened a door now don't (power windows, etc).

Yes, I pulled the switch wireing entirely and the switch itself felt the same as new.

The only thing so far that does not work as far as pulling the fuse is the interior lights, when you open the door it'* dark. I have SIRIUS radio in the car and the ACC power plug is working fine.

I am assuming the control module is bad, or the limiting sensor in the motor.

Is the relay for the sunroof in the rear fuse block? If so, until I scour wrecking yards for this control module, I can pull it and retain my courtesy lights?

Thanks for the help, I don't have anywhere else to turn.

This is possible. There are a number of convenience items controlled by the RAP circuit and these are spread across four different modules. Some may work depending on which module ultimately controls any given option.

This is my suspicion as well. Most likely the control module. The control module is located at the rear of the sunroof, above the headliner.

Which fuse did you pull?
Looking at the diagram, the only fuse you should need to pull is the one labelled RAP. Other convenience options included in the RAP system are fed power elsewhere and controlled by other modules.

This seems odd to me too. Although mine is a 2001, the fuse for my interior lights has nothing to do with my sunroof. When I pull the fuse for the lights, the sunroof works fine. Go figure . . .

I pull the RAP fuse, I believe #21? And I made a mistake, my interior light do work, I guess that evening I had the doors open too long to trip the auto off sensor. They worked this morning on the way to work.

I guess I will try to put the fuse back in for giggles and see if this might have reset something, hey it'* worth a try. If not I will have to buy a different module and pull down the headliner.

Amongst the other list of issues:

Intermediate shaft (3 times)
3rd oil pressure sensor
Irratic fuel guage (swiper replacement)
Bad rear shocks

The car only has 89K on it to date

My prior gen Bonneville was much less trouble
