Default cost of rear shocks job?

On an oil change at the GM dealer they told me my rear air shocks had a slow but critical fluid leak and quoted me $600 to replace them. I see no leakage in my driveway and feel no shock weakness, so Nahhhh to dealer. I came home and searched for rear air shocks. It seems Monroes will do fine (?) and a pair goes for around $70. So I called a nearby reputable garage and they quoted me $270 for Monroes installed. Quite the difference. But still I'm sure they can buy them for no more than I'd pay. Right? So it looks like they want $200 labor. Is that normal? Should I keep looking?

p.* The dealer also said my ATF was dirty brown, $190 to clean and replace. The local garage said $60. Hmmmm.

shops usually charge in the ballpark of 60 bucks an hour so..Sometimes they have a set price on the specific job.But the price they quoted could be on thier average time of the job or like said just a set price it never does harm to look around to find the best price..

Rear shocks are a 1 hour job. IIRC, the proper flat rate time for them is 1.2hrs for the pair.

Also, you get a better price online anyway. They will either be pulling shocks from inventory, or they will be getting them from your local parts store <AutoZone, O'Reillys, Napa, etc>. If you want a better idea for their price, look at the stores.
