Default Fuel Pump Noise

Hello everyone, new member and glad to be here.

I've got a 2000 SE that has, I'm being told by a reliable source, a noisey fuel pump. Sound comes from the trunk area, starts 45 sec to a minute after turning key to on, and last for about 2-3 seconds.

Car runs fine, no loss of gas mileage, not misssing or running rough.

I guess my concern is, does this mean that the pump is about to go or is it normal for it to make a certain amount of noise and this sucker is just loader than usual?

I just noticed something Cajun

The pump should fire up right after you turn the key but before the car starts. And yes it lasts for 2 or 3 seconds.

I know on my 89 the sound was distinct, it is on my Aurora as well, but not AS loud...I trust yours is fine.

If you want, check the pressure on the fuel rail, you will notice a schreader valve, attach a pressure gage to it...I'm better your fuel pump is just fine

Do you have Automatic Level Control ? The compressor will run for a few secs after turn ignition on. Just a quess.

markwb: Not quite sure what Automatic Level Control is exactly, so definitely don't know if I have it.

Jim W: Noise is after engine starts, only because I turn the key start the engine. If I turn the key to start without cranking, it will still make the noise in about the same amount of time interval.

What is this Leveling Control of which you speak and why does it making this nasty noise mean its working?

At the rear of the car there is an air compressor and air shocks that level the car if it is loaded or unloaded as need be. On the rear edge of the trunk is there an air oulet and pushbutton that says "air" beside the trunk latch? If so you have elc...electronic level control. This is the 'prrr' you hear after the car is started, it shouldnt come on everytime you start your car only if you added a bunch of weight to the trunk (ie suitcases) or removed weight. If this is turnning on everytime you start it then I suspect you have a wee leak in one or both shocks and the system is toping it up?

ELC was my guess too.. it'* probably normal. is it mroe like a humm or a whining/howling noise? a bad fuel pump is more like a loud whine that gets louder as your take gets lower (you can hear it more with a low tank of gas)

Thanks PontiacDad, thought that might have been it. But no Auto leveling on car, and actually it'* more of a grrr than a prrr.

Sounds like the Air compressor for the rear shocks to me too. Not sure if all the bonnevilles got the air fill up nipple in the trunk. Think all bonnevilles have air shocks. Don't worry the sound is normal, but if it does do this every time you start your car, there is a leak in the system somewhere.

BTW on Auroras the have ELC and don't have an air nossel either. Maybe it'* only an SSEI thing.
