Fuel Mileage or Lack There Of
Hey all, I'm a new member and let me say, impressed with the info swapped on this site. I have an '02 SE that has been mine for about a year and a half. I got it with 33,000 miles and it now has 94,000. My commute is a 100 mile round trip on the interstate with the cruise set at 80. My issue is that on a tank with that commute I average 22 MPG. Recently I made a trip to Oklahoma and tore up the highway, no cruise, speeds up to 90+ and got almost 30 MPG. What gives? The only problem I've seen with this car is an occasional "Service Engine Soon" light with an intermittent stumbling of the engine, but I think that may have to do with my fueling technique. Thanks in advance.

Several things come to mind with those symptoms. If it hasn't been done already, you are ready for plugs and wires. In addition, the O2 sensor is due for replacement.
I have an 88 mile commute although not at as high of a speed as yours and I average 24-27mpg depending on the time of year and this is with a SSEi.
Since you say that the SES light comes on, you could have the car scanned to see what codes are being set.

If it'* stumbling and showing a "Check Engine" light that goes away after a while you are probably having a misfire. Check your spark plugs and wires.
But until you get a scan to see what the code is it'* just a guess.
You can get your car scanned for free at Autozone.

After finally convincing my wife to stop topping off the tank, we went 3 months without the engine stumbling and no SES light. Today she took it to town and back and as soon as I got in just like magic, there is the SES, but the car runs fine and there'* half a tank.
I went to NAPA and had the code read, P1404, something about the EGR stuck open. I had it reset and hasn't come on in the past 50 miles, curious as to anyone'* thoughts. '02 SE with 97,000 miles. Thanks.

On the EGR, I'd wait to see if it reoccurs before doing anything.
