Working from memory, as I haven't been able to locate the instructions, but I think it went something like this. After you remove the shaft, extend it all the way and clean off as much of the old grease as you can. Then at the open end of the shaft, inject some heavy duty grease (like wheel bearing or CV) and plug off that end with a cork or similar object. Then slowly compress the shaft, allowing the grease to work its way out the other end. It may take several times to get it fully lubed. I never did it as the problem with mine was with the u-joint, not the shaft.

so, i made do with what i was in the mood to do today.. i just pulled the boot up over the lower ( assuming there might be 2 ) U-joint that is right above the rack, and i took a handfull of all-purpose grease and smeared it all over the u joint, it seems to have worked, atleast for now it worked, my clunking is gone

Great! Glad to hear that it worked. Mine was the upper joint, as was a friend'*. Most have had at least some temporary luck lubing the shaft. It wouldn't have helped me, and I would have wasted the time of pulling the shaft from the car. I hope it lasts a good long time.
