Default AXLE OR WHEEL HUB?

Today as I was driving I heard a rattle noise coming from the bottom of car..I thought it was something caught on the wheel so I put the car in park and investigated..found nothing, now when putting the car back in drive the noise was louder and wouldn't move..
I left the car on drive and opened the hood and could see the axle turning with a grinding noise...I'm just wondering if it'* the wheel hub or the axle that went on me.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if you blew out the CV joint on the axle.

There is an inner CV joint, close to the transmission, and an outer, close to the hub. Replacing the entire axle will save you a lot of time, and headaches.

Edit - This give the procedure for replacing the axle, and gives a diagram that shows the CV joints. Axle Replacement

Was there someone else in the car holding the brake?
If not, Please don't ever do that again without someone else in the car holding the brake.. it is VERY unsafe

as far as the problem goes, I would agree that a CV joint went out on ya.

Hey guy'* thanks again....I had the emergency brake on when I open the hood to investigate, thanks for the warning ..I had my friend pull me with his Durango to the mechanic this afternoon and confirmed it was the axle joint by the belt side ...My question now is..is this a common thing to happen (wear and tear) at 95000 miles, and if so should I replace both axles as preventive maintenance?

You only need to replace the bad axle. No need to do the other one. I haven't seen a bonneville or grand prix just break an axle. Not saying that it cant happen. Usually it would be under hard acceleration or a holeshot or powerbraking. Unless the cv joint fails internally with a pin failing out or something like that

Hey all,
I replaced both axle'* today it was the bearings, It'* running fine now..for your information the only sign I can think of my joints going bad was: ..In the pass when turning right and accelerating I would here a vibration sound coming from the front end. I had it checked out at the time and could not find anything wrong...I guess it was my axle joint.

EXACT same symptom my vehicle had. It was my drivers axle shaft assembly on my vehicle. I still have a slight vibration, definately from the passenger side. I know it'* my passenger sides axle shaft. Now i more or less have to find time to do it.
