Default Air Conditioner Recharge

Has anyone ever recharged their A/C system using one of the "do-it-yourself" kits available? Is it an easy thing to do? I have recharged freon-based systems that have the visual indicator window, but I have never tried a 134-based system...and I sure don't want to blow it out.
