Transmission, oh no :-(
Hi everyone,
Own a 2000SSEi, tonight getting to leave in the car, put it in D and nothing.
Reverse good, and 2-1 it will go into gear abruptly but shudders when you give it throttle but it will move.
Am I in trouble here like rebuild time, or is this something that can be done DYI?
The car has 106K on it BTW.

Having 2-1 working is a sign of the forward band having broken. Which is unfortunate because it'* deep in the trans. Lemme see if I can find Trannyman'* post from another forum that I saw yesterday.
Yep you probably have a broken Forward apply band and I see this pretty often on 00-02 models. This can be checked by dropping the lower trans pan and looking in a windowed out section in the case just to the passanger side of where the filter is. There is an apply pin that engages the Forward apply band and right where the pin makes contact is where the band will crack or break off, so you may either find a broken piece in the pan or look up and see cracks in the area. Unfortunately this means a full rebuild as the band is one of the last parts to come out of the trans.

The car was towed to a reputable local trans shop this afternoon for diagnosis, because this is out of my league. I explained the issues and the owner of the shop mentioned the band or a splined shaft failure?
Either way, I am looking at an expensive fix.
I will post what the shop tells me tomorrow, thanks again

Yup, the forward band broke. Pieces of it were on the bottom of the pan, but the trans tech mentioned the frictions on the band itself were in really good shape.
Going into it tomorrow, said when he tears it down he will look at anything else that should be done while he is in there while it'* out.
$1200 minimum bill, just bought my son his first car too. '1961 Lincoln Continental, the bad thing is the trans on that car is bad too, but the owner of the shop said after they are done with the Bonne he will open up the Lincoln trans and do an inspection at no charge, but I am sure that won't end there.

The splined shaft they mentioned is for fourth gear. Interesting the way they made the trans, 4th gear has only 2 friction clutches (low number) and this works on a 4th gear hub shaft, the splines where this hub shaft interfaces with the main drive of the trans is usually a failure point. Reason being is the shaft was not a hardened piece and the thin splines wear out. Once they wear enough they strip and see you later 4th gear.
Starting in 03 GM put in a hardened shaft. This is a normal piece expected in any rebuild of a pre 03 transmssion.

Trans is done, the band was replaced and all is well. It was about $1200 to do, but it works as good as new so far.
He said not doing a rebuild on the whole thing was a little riskier because of the valvebody? He warned me about down the road because of this, but all of the friction surfaces and the pump looked great so I hope this is the last time something happens before we do a full rebuild because of wear.
