I have a pump with a hose that can go down the dipstick tube and pull samples right from the pan, some what mess free (nothing with diesel'* are mess free lol), puts it right into a jar and off to http://www.oaitesting.com it goes. Usually only need about 4-5 oz for a good sample.
Costs about $20 or so, for a postage paid kit, which if you're interested, I can get it for you.....Here'* what I use to do mine:

I have a Fumoto valve and it works well to take a sample.
Sorry to get off topic.
Oil Analysis are a worthwhile investment to keep track of your engines wear. Blackstone Labs just went up to $22.50 about two months age.
