Default Wipers stop working after every few swipes

I have a 2000 SSEi and while driving to work this morning in the rain, I had the wipers on intermittent, somewhere in the middle of the scale, and all of a sudden the wipers out of no where skipped across the windshield. I tried turning them off, and while in the off position, the started to go real fast for about 30 seconds, then froze in the upright position across the windshield.

They kept doing this as I turned around to go home and switch cars. If I put the lever in the fastest option, they worked fine. If I put them in intermittent or off, they would wipe a few times then get stuck, and skip across as they would wipe.

Any ideas? I was thinking the switch, but since they work fine at high, I wasn't sure it that was possible.

Inside the wiper motor there is a circuit board that can get wet and make wipers do wacky things.
You may be able to take motor out, remove cover, dry it out and be Ok - otherwise replace motor.

This happened to me and have heard of it happening to others.

LOL, I never heard that one before. Good to know we have experience on the forum. Anyone happen to have pics or a good write up on how to do the work needed? We'll turn it into a writeup for future use.

I think you may be right about it drying out. I noticed once it'* dry, the wipers will work fine. Then if it starts raining for more than a few hours, they start to act all funny again. New motor time I suppose.

One other thing to consider. In the W bodies GM had trouble with the wiper motors getting wet and had a Tech Bulletin about adding a plastic shield over it. I've found that shield in JY'* and put it on one I was fixing wiper on.

Might want to check with a stealership if there'* a bulletin on your year for that and try to get the shield. Then install and it doesn't need a new motor.

My wipers did that after a heavy snow. After the weather dry up wipers started working fine. I think your problem is wiper board is wet.
