If your converter is clogged, if you set your hand near the exit of the tailpipe while running, it would feel really really hot. Abnosmally hot.. Also like I mentioned earlier, it will start to glow after awhile.

I took his car for a drive and that actually sounds pretty close to what was happening. I can't vouch for it all since I can't say how the car normally runs, but that looks close.

Sounds like either restricted exhaust or maybe the */C bypass valve jumping around?

I did some basic checks on the battery when he was over. Volts were good, alt was charging, battery charger indicated a good battery (no low amps).

I have scanning software but it will probably be a week or more before I get my replacement cables for the ones I lost. I still need to order them yet.

The ones I "buy the most" right now are bypass valve, and possibly exhaust restriction.

Hey Crazy, I just thought of something simple to look at. Try doing the scan from the techinfo section (http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/techinfo/?article=34). See if there are any codes stored in your ECM. It won't tell you nearly as much as a real scan, but it'* worth a shot.

I agree. When the convertor clogged on my '82 Cutlass, the local Car-X place did this for me, so I could drive around the block and just verify that that'* what the problem was, before I shelled out all the money for a new convertor. It was loud, but fun...

my 94SSE does that only when i put cheap gas in it. I usually use exxon gas and it runs great and when i put any other fuel into it, it does all the stuff your sayin. I dont know why but some of our bonnies are just fickle and picky!!! I guess they know what they want. !! NE ways, you may also have water in your tank or in the fuel. My friend had that same problem with her Toyota Camry and she had to have her tank dropped and cleaned and her filter replaced. My problem is also at about 200-220 degrees but only when i use cheap gas, go figure..

Did you ever git this fixed? Mine seemed to be doing this today, only after half an hour on the highway, I noticed a burning smell that I thought was belt.
