Jack up the motor with a block of wood under the oil pan. Remove the motor mount that'* in your way.

If it'* bad, cut it off with a pocketknife.

If it'* not, put a 15MM socket on a breaker bar and push the tensioner (In the middle of all the hardware) towards the firewall.

If you're changing the belt, cramp the front wheels to the right, remove the splash guards inside the wheel well, and remove the sleeved motor mount bolt (18 MM) to slip the new belt in. I had a bit of trouble getting the sleeve back in, so I ground a few thousands off the end of the sleeve on my grinder (hold the end flat against the SIDE of the grindstone) and that worked quite well.

Have a helper hold the tensioner forward while you align the new belt on the pulleys. Release the tension, ensure that the belt is perfectly aligned in the grooves, reinstall the splash guards, and you're done.

Took me about 1/2 hour. The belt was $24 at Autozone. Your car should have a diagram under the hood showing the belt routing.

Good luck.

ya what he said ^^^^^
and you don't have to jack up the engine or remove the whole mount just the sleeve that the bottom bolt goes through.

Air conditioning compressor is removed in the above photo. You can see the 15mm nut that you need to loosen to remove the stud (shown loose) and sleeve. I have only done belts on two Series II cars, but I did not have to raise the engine or grind the sleeve.

Default Belt routing diagram for a 97 SSEi

Hey Bill, I am changing the motor in my SSei and the belt situation is the worst ever!!!!!!!!!!
what a poor design. What years are like this??? Also, does anyone where I can find a diagram of how the belts route for my 97 SSEi. I got frustrated and cut them off, then I realized my car does not have a belt routing sticker!!!!! What can I say, it was late and I was getting pissed at the whole engine mount thing!!!!!
