I doubt it really matters which way it goes, but all 3 UIM'* I've replaced had the notch in the #5 cylinder (yes, I wrote that little detail in my notebook!).

Thanks Agrazela

I was thinking the notch was on #5 runner but wanted to check.
The notch looks like it is covered by the upper manifold gasket wonder why it is there.

No pic that clearly shows the notch...best I can do to describe it is this:

At the bottom of each of the 6 plastic runners is a "lip" or "ridge" that fits the runner into its corresponding UIM gasket hole. On one of them (cylinder 5 or 2, depending on how the runner insert is placed into the UIM), that lip has a small "gap" or "notch".

Like the OP said, that notch is completely covered by the UIM gasket, and doesn't seem designed to provide clearance for anything...my best guess is it'* a "grip" for the manufacturer'* conveyor belt or for a robot assembler.

In any case, the runner is rotationally virtually symmetrical otherwise, and fits perfectly into the UIM either way...I seriously doubt it matters whether that notch is placed in cylinder 2 or 5, so don't anybody go tearing down top-ends over this
