Unhappy Water damage

'93 Bonny SSE */C - I hit high water on highway the other night, at pretty high speed, going downhill. Temp gauge red-lined & drove about 1 mile to get home, as weren't any places to pull off anyway on this freeway.

Main belt (serpentine?) including to C/* & water pump was broke. C/* pulley not turning. Car still starts fine (just tried it briefly) & all electrical seems fine.

Should the C/* pulley still be turning even without a belt?

Insurance adjuster not out yet but said over phone probably totaled is it'* water-locked.

Only has about 74k on it & mint condition, even just got new Goodyear Eagles. Major bummer probably w/ the insurance only paying about $3k.

Any ideas on how bad?

Not sure I follow you on this? Both belts came off? The ins adjuster says it'* water locked but you said it started fine. So how can it be water locked? Put on new belts and you should be fine.

Sorry, a real novice here. I should have looked better including the diagram under hood.

It'* only the back belt that broke & came off. One that also turns the supercharger.

The rear belt turns the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. Replace it and you will be fine. Chances are you hit water, the belt got wet and it came off.

On my diagram under hood, they call it the back belt & it turns the */c, a/c & w/p, which explains the overheating.

The belt broke, but maybe it just slipped & got chewed in two. Looks like that 'cause it'* shredded where it broke.

Anyway, thanks. You guys are great! Fingers-crossed.

what could cause the belt to break after hitting water? it only had about 10k miles on it.

the insurance adjuster is trying to say it burned, or in other words cover their a$$ to deny the claim as usual wear & tear unrelated to the water flying in the engine @ 50mph.

When the pulleys get wet the belt can slip off and get caught and break and mind you 50 mph is around 1500-2000 rpm..That belt comes off going say 1800 rpm its gonna break.
