If you've got a noise like popping knuckles when accelerating round a corner with the steering at or near full-lock, you've got an outer CV joint ready to go. (By "accelerating round a corner" I mean just starting up from a stop sign and turning right, that kind of thing.)

One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention is a bad motor mount or two. Under hard acceleration the engine may torque itself into a bad position if its mounts are loose or broken. You might want to try having someone watch the engine, with the hood up, engine running, car in Drive and you pressing firmly on the brake with your left foot. Give it some gas with your right foot (not a lot; don't go nuts here) and see if the engine is deflecting more than it should. _Some_ deflection is normal and no, I can't say how much that should be, but my feeling is that you'll kind of "know" if things are looking weird there.

Oh, yeah, have your assistant stand _next_ to the car, not in front of it... Anything can happen...
