1992 SSEi repair issues
I have a '92 SSEi supercharged. I have 123,000 miles on it.
The Pontiac Dealer says I need the timing chain and gears replaced. It will cost around $850. Has anyone had this done? Does that price seem reasonable?
Also, the engine intermittently revs up to about 2300 rpm and then goes back down after a while. Sometimes it doesn't go back down, but sounds like an airplane taking off when I pull into the driveway. When it does go back down, it almost feels like it is going to die. When it is revving, when you initially press on the gas pedal, the car engine seems to shake 3 times. (The Dealer has replaced some "sensor" two times and that was not the problem.) Now they are talking about replacing the computer. Does that sound like a fix?
What do you all think?

oh boy, more problems with your mint 92? :(
What dealership are you taking it to? It almost sounds like they are pulling idea'* outta thin air.
The inconsistant idle is just about trademark 92 SSEi
but it sounds like it'* getting worse.
Gearheads, do you have any ideas?
*Oh, and I went ahead and moved it down to 92-99*

Our timing chains and gears typically last a long time, as there is an automatic tensioner there. It rarely causes any issues (never that I know of) when it wears out.
Your idle issues may be a MAF sensor (disconnect it to rule it out), an IAC issue (follow the throttle body / Maf sensor cleaning in TECHINFO), or a TPS (they are adjustable on 92 models).
It could also very well be a PCM. It would be good to get a scan of the car, and compare it to another 92 SSEi. Anyone know of another 92 SSEi owner in WA that owns a scantool?
A simple comparison scan between the two cars may be very helpful.

1) Does you car have the SES Light on?
2) If so, has the dealership found a code 41 from the PCM?
3) What has lead them to the idea that the timming chain is in need of replacement? And how many miles doe the car have on it?
4) What has lead them to the possibility that the PCM may be bad?
5) What sensors have the dealership replaced and what was their reasoning for the replacement?
The timming chains can be a bit tricky.... But all of the 3800'* have timming chain tensioners... The 90-91 models should have the all metal tensioner and failures of these are next to none...
For anyone who has seen a timming chain from an 91-95 3800 Vin C, L and 1, you know how much strech was present when compared to the new chain, almost shocking... It may be possiblt to strech beyond the limits of the tensioner, if you get to that point than you may just need a new timming chain... But, I have seen too many of these 3800'* with 200K+ with the original timming chain...

you guys might want to use the full spelling of hyphens; for example PCM, EGR, TPS, MAF.

I think its all about the labor and the genuine GM parts... lol
I posted this someplace...
at the time I spent, $40 on the chain and gear set, $14 for the interrupter, $14 for the Front timming cover gasket set, $10 for oil and $3 for the filter... Less than $100 in parts...

I have 260K. Original timing chain. I doubt this is the problem.
The whooshing noise and the high idle sound like a vacuum leak.
The surging could very easily be related to the vacuum leak.
Either way, I would STRONGLY suggest NOT replacing the timing chain and gears.
I would STRONGLY suggest finding a good, independent shop that you can trust. Talk to your friends to find one.
