Default Airbag question

I have been reading the forums about the airbag module that is located under the passenger seat. My 97 Bonneville has the airbag light on and I'm trying to figure the problem out.

Should I pull the passenger seat to look at the module? If so, will disconnecting the battery and pulling the fuse keep the bags from deploying?

Should I try to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery only?

Would a shop other than the dealer have a scanner for the airbag system? Would AutoZone?

I'm not too worried about getting into an accident with the airbags off, I'm more worried about them deploying without warning on their own!
