Default "How to get backwards trans bolt?"

Hi,

I saw an old post regarding "Replacing 4T60E - Do I have to drop the subframe?"

I'm doing a similar R&R of the same transaxle and can't for the life of me locate the one stupid bolt that'* installed in/from the opposite direction. I was hoping that someone could help narrow it down for me. Is it near the top or bottom? Or closer to the front of the vehicle, or more toward the firewall? Is there an access hole in the block somewhere? Do you go through the starter hole? Did you have to remove an exhaust manifold to see it or gain access to it? I can't find it anywhere and it'* the last one that I need to remove. I'd be grateful for any info (or pics) as this thing'* driving me absolutely crazy. Thanks!

It is near at the firewall side of the motor, about the level of where the front exhaust manifold crossover connects with the rear. It should be directly below that. It'* not too bad to get, but the one I did the rear exhaust manifold was removed already. Some people say you need a bunch of long extensions and come in from the passenger side rear wheel well. Let me know if you need a picture as I have a motor sitting in my garage I can take one of. it'll be later tonight though...

The best way to do it is to have about 4 ft worth of extenstions on the ratchet with your socket on, and to go in from the passsenger side wheel. As for location, if you're looking from the wheel well, you'll see where the passenger side CV shaft goes in, start putting the socket and extensions in about 3/4'* of the way up the left side of the housing. Pretty much the socket will ride along the top edge of the trans housing and will get you within about 1/4-1/2" of the bolt head, and then you just have to mess with it from there to get it going.

Hope this helps,
Nate

These guys are right, mjw. Here are some pix to help. When I do this bolt, I remove the RF wheel and splash guard. Backwards bolt is at the 10:00 O'Clock position of the bell housing looking in from the passenger side. You need a 3-foot extension and an 11/16" six-point to get it. The 11/16 will fit more tightly than the 18 mm. May help to remove the oil sending unit, it will be very near to being in harm'* way.

Here'* how I get it:

Now, Mike1995 says you can get it by sneaking in under the power steering pump, without even removing the wheel. And looking at my own picture, that'* right where that shaft is placed. He should know, having just done it. But to undo it without removing the wheel would require just the right length of extensions and would probably require more bending than this old body can manage.

Old age may not be a factor here Bill, but a bad back from the Army certainly ends my day early sometimes.

Yep, going through the wheel well is easy if you have enough extension. But for those of us that come up short in the extension dept, we have to circumvent it.

Watch out for that oil pressure sensor! They break easy.

Thanks VERY, VERYmuch to all. Transaxle is out and on the bench! I now have another "challenge" though, but it'* probably best for a different thread. I think I'll call it,

Default A few pix with the tranny *out* of the vehicle

Hi,

Since you folks were so helpful in leading me to the location of the infamous "backwards bolt", I thought I'd add another entry to this thread from a slightly different perspective. A few pix of the bolt location with the tranny out of the vehicle. Hopefully this will minimize this "mystery" in the future for others embarking on their first 4T60-E R&R .
