Default Homemade Actron CP9110 cable for '95 Bonneville

Got a heckuva deal on a new obsolete CP9110 Actron Scan tool with a bunch of other goodies for $89 from tradervar.com. Check it out.

http://www.tradervar.com/cgi-bin/sto...age=cp9110.htm

It will only do OBDI, but Heck, that'* all I got! Problem was, I could not get it to work with my '95 Bonneville. The cable I got from Actron ("OBDII 3.0") would not communicate with my OBDI system. Related discussion here:

I would tell you to get an Actron CP9110 scantool (they don't make them anymore but there are still some around ) The only problem tho is that the OBD2 cable CP9115 is very hard to come across... You'd be hard pressed to find one... I have this tool with the CP9115 cable... Had it for 4 years I think...
Well, I could not find a CP9115 cable anywhere, so I spent some time with the service manuals for the '92 and the '95 and cables I had for my new CP9110 and figured out a cheap fix. First you get a six-inch long Actron OBDII 3.0 cable for about $15. I believe this cable is the one currently used with the newer CP9145 tool (you can verify, Don) Then you cut it in half. Go find some four conductor cable (I used telephone wire, but I would have liked something a bit heavier) and splice as shown below.

Don't know if it will work with all '95s and '94s, but it works like a charm with mine!

I ordered the CP9115 (actually won it on Ebay) and it came in as the OBD1 cable. This means I have a spare, and only need the 3.0 end to have cables for both my cars. I was intending to use the 93 and 95 FSM to do the same thing, but you just saved me the work.

I found and bought an OBD2 cable with a 9-pin serial on the other end. I'm going to cut off the OBD1 connector on my spare 9110 cable, and put on a female 9 pin that will mate to the new cable. That way if I get my hands on laptop software, I can still use the 9-pin if I need to.

I'll build my cable and test tomorrow if I have time.

I picked this up:

http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/cables.htm

So I'm taking my spare OBD1 (CP9111?) and cutting off the OBD1 end, and soldering in a mating 9-pin serial connector. So it'll go from the Actron to a 9pin, connected to a 9pin cable with the OBD2 connector on the other end. Not ideal, and somewhat long, but it leaves me a 9-pin to OBD2 cable unmolested for future use with a laptop if I choose.

That ought to end up pretty slick. And with any luck you will be able to download the recordings to a spreadsheet instead of the barbaric method I am using.

I re-did my '95 SLE cable with modular phone connectors and a 12' 4-conductor phone cord from Radio Shack. The components cost me $18, but the cable is much more robust. Disassembled the wall mount case from the phone jacks, but the connectors are still gigantic.

I'm thinking of embedding the wire connections in RTV to provide strain relief.

Behold- frankencable! Ugly, but it works!

You have listed on your Actron cable:

Green
Yellow
White
Blue
Purple
Bare (cable?)

I have in my new Actron cable that I just cut:

Yellow 12 and 13
Blue 14
Black 7
Orange 10 and 11
Red 9
Brown 8
Bare (strain cable)

We don't need 12V for the Actron, as the tool is seperately powered, so WTF?

The CP9110 will need no separate power connection to the lighter if you wire it as I showed. The cable I pictured above pulls power and ground from DLC.

The colors may be different in the cable you have. The important thing is that the circuits end up on the actron tool end of the cable as indicated. The bare is a ground that is internally bonded on the cables I have tested. You can check this out pretty easily with a continuity tester (or an ohmmeter) with a needle in the holes if your probe is too big to fit in.

The numbers you have listed - are those as shown in my drawing for the DLC end of the cable?
