It looks cruddy on the outside, but how did the internal parts move when you shake it compared to the new model? The inside may not have had the deposits that have coated the outside.
How many miles? I think I replaced mine on 98 3800 with about 80-90K miles on it.

If it rattles, soak it in lacquer thinner, clean off the crud, and reinstall it.

Cruddy parts do not necessarily equal defective parts.

If u can still hear it rattle, its good. But its cheap enough to replace on a regular basis.

They are under 10 bucks...why not just replace it with a fresh one?

"arent they like $3? "

Yes, noting that price is approximately equal to a six-pack of cheap suds .

Don't think I'm stupid here I'm trying to learn as much as I can about cars and engines.(one day hope to go to UTI for Automotive Tech) But what is a PCV valve and where is it located and is it something needed for mant. My car is getting a lot of miles on her and I just want to keep her runnin as long as possible, would'nt like a new car payment. What are some of the high mant. things needed to be done. My car has gotten new water-pump, starter, fuel pump and filter, coolant flush about 40-50'* miles ago, and tranny flushed when bought with 107,000 miles on it. Thanks for help. O ya and in a coulple of weeks new plugs and wires, and of course oil change ever 3 grand.
