1992 SSE...14.5mpg city and 24.8mpg highway?
I recently had a tune-up done...wires, plugs ..air and gas filter. Why does my car get lousy city mileage and good highway mileage? Car runs fine...smooth idle ...good pickup, trans shifts fine.

I think it'* a simple matter of the driving style you're forced into on the Island. Probably nothing more. I think your car was originally rated at 18 city. You also have some miles on that thing by now, too.

A series 1 blown car has a 2500 stall converter, that'* why the bad in town mileage. The Series 1 doesn't make any torque below ~1700-1800 rpm.

It was the thermostat...it'* too cold for a 180 right now. I put the 195 back in and now I'm getting 17.5 mpg. I will put the 180 back in when it warms up here again.

I challenge you to put it back in again. You'll see no difference. This has been discussed time and again. A 15° difference in your Thermostat rating will not have an effect on mileage, unless there is something else wrong with your car.
I'd bet that your awareness of the problem alone is helping your mileage. You may also be in the early stages of the 'burnt valve' syndrome that plagues the 92 SE and SSE. The colder weather may HELP your mileage in that condition.

I understand what you are saying but my mileage went from 230 a tank full to 280 (local driving) after putting the 195 back in. Coincidence? Perhaps. Anyway what'* the percentage of the 92'* that will suffer from burnt valves? All of them? In the summer with the 195 in the car the car ran at 220 degrees....too hot in my opinion. But now that winter is here the car runs at just under 200 degrees with the 195 therm. With the 180 and colder weather the car was barely reaching 180. I'm only going by what my trip meter is telling me when I gas up.
