Changing crank sensor because Tach intermittently not workin
Hey guys, I have a 97 LeSabre with the L36 w/ 68,500 miles on it. In the past 1000 or so miles, the tach will stay resting at 0 when I first start the car and let it idle. Once I start driving the car, the tach will start fluctuating and then behave normally. I read on this board that someone had this problem and their culprit was the crank sensor. I am not throwing and codes or having any engine problems, but short of my tach itself in the instrument cluster having a problem, I didn't have any better ideas to remedy this. I usually don't do any heavy duty repair work on this engine since its still fairly low mileage, so I'm not well acquainted with that wonderful passenger side of the motor, where all the accessories are. I'm assuming the crank sensor is readily accessible, just attached with a couple bolts, and I don't have to pull the balancer to get to it. Am I correct? Are the mounting holes for the crank sensor slotted, so I have to set the gap from the sensor to the reluctor wheel? I know on a newer Ford I had to work on the crank sensor had adjustable position.

Since the crank sensor is responsible for ignition timing and to some extent fuel injector sequencing, if it fails, the engine won't run, and you'll get a code.
I don't know about lesabres, but bonnevilles are known to have bad connections behind the IP cluster.
