Default new guy

i've been driving Bonne'* for over 10 years now. Currently on second one, a white 97SE that I bought new. Currently at 104K miles. Previously had 89 SE that I sold at 156K.

The 97 has been a great car. The only thing I have done so far is water pump at 60K. Aside from good maintenance that is.

Couple of questions:

1. Climate control is acting up. A/C blows thru floor vents for 5-20 minutes before finally starting to blow thru dash vents. Is this the computer?

2. Since new I've had trouble keeping tires balanced. The original Goodyear Eagles gave me trouble. I eventually replaced them before they were shot because of it. Second set (other Goodyear) same thing. Went to Michelin at about 70K and still a problem. Doesn't seem to be a wheel problem because rotation does not help, and they do balance out OK, they just don't stay balanced. Why is this? We are careful about potholes etc. Any recommendations on tires? I am planning to go back to Goodyear Eagles I think unless there are better ideas....

3. Struts are SHOT! What is the best strut out there to use?

I'm glad I found the forum! I am just about to buy my wife a new car and take back my beloved Bonne which she has been driving for the past couple of years......

TIA

Mike

Your climate control problem is usually caused by the vacuum control that where the air is directed. Take your car to a good A/C shop. They should be able to fix for about $100 range.

Your tire problem is usually caused by tires that have not been balanced properly. Had the same problem with mine. Took several visits to different tire stores before I finally found a good tire store that had an employee that knew how to balance the tires properly. Once I found him, haven't had the problem since.

As for your struts, if you plan to keep your car, go back with orginial GM'*.

Doubt it; 5-20 minutes is an eternity in the computer'* world; i.e. if it'* going to barf, it'll do so right away, and flaky computers tend to _go_ crazy, rather than start out that way and get better again later.

More likely you have only marginal vacuum with which to operate the system, and it takes your car a while to accumulate some. I would check for vacuum leaks under the hood, or possibly a partially-clogged catalytic convertor. (The default system setting without vacuum is to blow through the floor vents as you've seen.)
