Default POTENTIALLY TRANSMISSION IS DONE????

My Bonneville has been treating me fine lately.
But the worst was the other morning when I started up to go to work.
All was ok with the start up, put it into gear, no problem.
Started to go down the street and the car sounded like thare was something caught in the drive train. It grew louder the more I accelerated and quited as i slowed down.
When put into reverse, the car makes no noise at all. The gears do not delay or klunk when engaged, only when the wheels are moving does it make noise, even in Neutral.
It almost reminds me of a me of the sound of when we used to put playing cards on our bikes and have them run against the spokes, but much louder and more metallic.
When I got to my local shop, they lifted it up and said my transmission was making the noise and was likely shot or has a gear loose inside. It came with no warning. Is there any other explanation for this without pulling the Tranny off and apart?
Please help as I have a very tough and heartfilled decision to make about a rebuilt tranny, which is scary for a number of reasons, or buy a new used vehicle, more scary!!

WSS couldn't do that

I'm thinking the diff could be on it'* way out. Or something with the torque converter.

Did you check the transmission fluid? Do you know how to check it? Get the car up to temp, and run it through all gears [R, N, OD, D, 2, 1] while leaving it in each position for several seconds. Repeat that a few times, and check the Transmission dipstick.

It'* highly unlikely that you are low on fluid, and getting those symptoms, however the fluid can tell quite a bit about the transmission'* condition. Be sure to note the colour and odour of the fluid [don't be afraid to smell it]. Just don't taste it, not a good comparison, all tastes the same .

It looks like the reverse reaction drum, also know as the "Stove Pipe", failed in your transmission. Make sure that if you have to replace the "Stove Pipe", they install the new improved hardened unit.[/img]
