Default Alternator on way out?

This morning as I was warming up my 1998 Olds 88 I put my drivers window down and it stopped about halfway down. When I tried to put it all the way down it didn't move and my engine shuddered and stalled.I restartd with no problem but could not move the window without this thing dying on me.I tried the headlights, horn and radio-they did not affect it but if I turned on the rear defroster it would kill the engine.I went on a short errand and when I got back in my driveway I was able to put my window back up and run the rear defroster with no problems.Any ideas as to what this may be?(battery is less than 1 year old, connections are tight and no corrosion).

Unique problem. Double checking the battery connections should be on your list, even though you did a visual, pulling off the cables may show some hidden corrosion.

What doesn't make sense is you car restarted after it died. If your car didn't have the amps to lower a window- where did it find the amps to restart the engine? The alternator powers the electric while the car is running, but the battery can provide some support if the alternator is failing....

I might try to isolate things. Does the car die when lowering other windows? I would be looking for a short to ground somewhere, although a fuse should blow.

Put a volt meter on the battery with the engine running and see what the voltage reads.

Not sure if the Olds share the same type of electrical system as the Bonnevilles do, but its worth a shot because most other systems are pretty close...
