Hey I need a little help. '95 SSEi with bad wheel shake around 50 mph and up. Accelerate or decelerate and it goes away. I have checked everything and the only thing loose is the right side tie rod. I have replaced the outer end but there is still play side to side on the tire. The tie rod has play in and out but not up and down where it enters into the boot at the center link. Does this sound like a CV joint problem or something else? How do I get the whole tie rod assembly out? Thanks.

Bad inner tie rod.

Duh. I just realized I didn't answer you question. To remove the inner tie rod, You slide the black boot off, towards the outer tie rod. You have to cut the stock retainer and use a hose clamp to replace it. Once you get that slid off, Put a strap wrench on the shiny arm, then put a pipe wrench on the black arm and turn it counter clockwise. Count the turns as you unscrew the outer from the inner, screw the outer on the new inner the same number of turns. Put it back together, torque inner tie rod to 180 ft lbs, get an alignment.

Thanks for the reply. As I see it I need to pop the outer tie rod end back out. Right? Also wondering what the torque is for the outer tie rod nut?

Yup. That outer tie rod has to come back off.

The outer bind nut is probably right in the 30lb ft range. I always just tighten + 1/8th turn.

So I'm looking at this thing and it appears to be a pain in the arse trying to do everything where it sits. I talked with another person and they said the easiest way is to pull the whole rack and pinion out of the car! The easiest way?! I want to make sure that I can do this with out removing the whole R&P assembly before I get too far and the next thing will be towing it somewhere to finish the job. I assume you've had to do this before so is there anything else involved that I might want to consider while I'm weighing my options? I appreciate it.

Nope, I've never had to pull the rack to do it. But it does take two people to first break the inner tie rod loose. You'll want to pull the passenger tire, Turn the wheels to the left. It'* very important that you hold the shiny arm inside the rack still while you break the inner tie rod loose.

Well I appreciate all your input. I got it done, took it to have it aligned and to have the wheels balanced, but it still shakes. Oh well.

If it shakes the techs doing the alignment should have noticed something out of the ordinary.
