Default Camshaft Sensor Pickup

Well i took my car into the shop to have the camshaft sensor replaced and i called today to see if it was done yet and they said no because the pickup for the sensor, some magnetic thingy was broken off and not there. I immediately asked the next question, "so its in the engine somewhere" and they said yes, is that a pretty bad thing or is it something that the heat and stuff would wear down eventually? Also what will this new sensor and pickup do for my cars performance and driveability, it was driving sorta shitty since i got it back.

No sweat, Jag. It'* actually probably just hanging out under the timing chain cover. They'll find it.

It most likely found a spot and is magnetically stuck to the block under the timing cover, or oil pan. If it were me, I'd like to find it just for peace of mind.
