Default oil pressure gauge help

ok...I need some help here....I am not sure what is up...just a little worried....I started the car this morning and let it run at idle....I noticed the oil pressure gauge was eratic and spikeing up...the needle jumped above the last line on the gauge....I shut the car off...poped the hood...checked the oil....every thing looked ok....I had to get to the bank so I drove it....every thing seemed ok....the needle did not get quite as high (little higher than I am used to though) but it was still a bit unsteady...the pressure seemed to drop if it was high and I gave it some gas....I am not sure if it was all in my head or not but the engine seemed to be running just slightly rougher than normal but not too bad....this is a high mile engine....what do I need to check? Thanks.

Take the old oil pressure sending unit out and replace it with a mechanical gauge first and observe oil pressure to make sure every thing is a-ok... If it is I would replace the sending unit.

agreed sometimes that the gagues in the cluster can get wacky sometimes....a mechanical gague is the only way to be sure what pressure that the car is running at

how was the car running when the gauge was wacky?...was it running smooth?...if so i'd say its the guage..if it was sputtering or running rough i'd be alot more concerned...could have been the cold weather(assuming it was cold out).

Default Erratic Oil Pressure

My car had similar problems after my first oil change right after I bought it. I later found out Precision Tune installed the wrong oil filter for the SSEi. All was normal again with the correct filter.
