Hi, first time poster. I am currently looking at a 92-99 body style of the Bonneville. I know about the intake leaks with the 3800 series II. I was wondering if there were any links to the updates that GM made through this body style. Also anything else to look out for when searching for a used bonnevile.

Also I am going to be looking at a 1998 black SE today. One owner with 38,000 originial miles on it. Cloth interior, alloy wheels. She wants 6800. Is this a good deal? Sure seems to be. I am located in Nebraska. Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply!! Chad

I drive a 98 SE, and I love it. I did have the upper intake failure that N/A engines are "prone" too, and you don't get all the fancy gizmos the "upper classes" brag about.

But, I get at least 20MPG, even with my lead foot. And I personally prefer the front end look and the cloth seats.

The major, noticable differences between the years are the front grill and tail lights. I think the 96-99 look the best myself.

1995 came with the Series II motor which is smoother and much more powerful
1996 got the restyling on the outside which I like better than the earlier ones
1997 came with the 4T65E transmission [and 4T65E -HD on supercharged models] which is stronger than 4T60E in earlier models, it also has OBD II smog control which makes changes in the on board computer possible by reflashing the computer'* EEPROM

I just bought a 1997 SE with SLE package and supercharged engine with 133K miles for $2900 [edmunds value was $3760] and it is VERY clean. One power seat motor does not work but everything else does and this one is LOADED. Out here in California the Bonnevilles are not worth much. Good for buying used not so good for buying new.

Checked edmunds.com for prices. They make more adjustment for mileage than KBB, print out the price and you can show what Edmunds think it is worth to negotiate with the owner. Out here in California $6800 is WAY high. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'd have to say '93 was the best year.

'92 was the first of the style, no roller rockers, some with no EGR valve. Good for daily driving if in good condition.
'93 got both of those and is easy to scan. Easiest to modify.
'94 went to a linear EGR valve and a OBD1/2 scan system Hard to scan and therefore modify, but still a good car.
'95 got the Series2 NA motor and the Series1 SC motor. Still hard to scan.

Then they made some more, But just get a '93.

Wow.. talk about biased. Asking me I'd say anything before 95 is a pass. Only because my bias of wanting to control where the air goes on the electronic climate control.

However the info above is pretty much right in line.

95 was the first year for series 2 NA motors
95 was still series 1 SC motor
96 was all series 2 motors however the 4T60 transmission was used.
97+ the transmissions were 4T65'*.
There was a recent poll on the club and this was backed up by transmission shops that 4T65'* are more likely to need rebuilding sooner than a 4T60.

I have a series 1 95 supercharged and a series 2 97 supercharged. Both transmissions are strong in my cars however after driving both I prefer the way the series 2 pulls hard all the way up the speedo. The series 1 starts to lose momentum around 50ish.
