Today when I got up to pick my fiance up from work at 6 am I noticed a wine that I could hear from inside my Bonny. Upon further inspection I determined it is coming from the power steering pump. Its a constant wine , not the same wine you get when your turn the wheel. This wine in there whether I am turning the wheel or not. I felt no loss in steering. Steers the same as it always has. It should be running better being that I changed the fluid with Valvoline synthetic blend power steering fluid. What do you guys think?

is it any louder when you turn the steering though? Does the whine while the car is standing still? It might not be the powersteering pump as other belt driven items can whine as the wear out. Bearings can go in the altinator, water pump and A/C too that often make an increase in noise before they go.

If the current oil is full and clean, changing the oil will likely have little effect on the noise - but you could certainly try.

Theres 2 different wines now, one is the normal one that comes when you turn the wheel, the second that just started is all the time whether your turning the wheel or not. I did the old ear test under the hood and determined that the power steering pump, which is located on the top rear of the engine was making the noise. It just showed up this morning. I find it wierd that it gained a wine front sitting all night. I spend alot of time with my car and I pretty much know every sound she makes, and this one didn't show up till this morning. I dont know if the pump is going bad or what? I have the same amount of power steering as it always had.

It is good that you know your car. Too many people really dont have a clue. In all the cars that I have had, fortunately, I have not had pump problems...but I have known several people that have. From what I recall, if it really is your pump that is going, there is actually very little you can do other than to replace the pump. One thing that someone told me though...if it is going, you should replace it quickly because little metal and/or plastic bits that come off the failing pump can go into the steering rack...and then you are into major $$.

If it really is the pump, I would say get it replaced quickly. As you said, you can see it and it is actually not that bad to replace on some cars. I actually have never looked at mine to see how hard it would be to replace if I had to. I will go outside and take a look as soon as it stops raining!

Gonna shoot for the obvious here, but did you get any paint on the belt when you did your engine?

I dont know if I got paint on my belt. I might have. But why would the noise show up today and not after I painted it?

Just a wild a$$ed guess, but it may have taken the paint this long to break down enought to squeal? To test this theory, let the belt run across a bar off soap. Back home remedy for shutting up a squealy belt.

Just hopin' for the cheapest fix...

Very strange, I went and started up and the noise was gone, I also just got back from driving it for an hour and the sound never returned. I wonder why the wining was only there for my 4 mile drive early this morning?? Very wierd. I was really giving her the works too. I was flying out some country roads and stuff, giving my bonny some real exercise. Still the sound was totally gone. I stoped and listened under the hood and still nothing. This has got me freaking puzzled Thanks for your help anyway, I'll let yall know if it ever comes back.

Maybe paint got on it, and it just needed time to work itself out? I'd keep an eye on the fluid level (warm) and an ear on the noise for a week, and if it'* fine, rest your mind.

Good news! I hope it wont come back. You might want to follow through then with your original plan to change the oil...perhaps there was some moisture and/or debris in there...who knows.

The belt thing could have been it too.

I just hope you dont have more problems.
