Default Rebuild steering rack?

I've got a spare F41 rack, and before I drop it in I want to know it works right. Can I rebuild it? There must be some seals in there and some gear lash to adjust. Anybody know?

You may have more troubles rebuilding it than just putting it in. How often do these racks fail? I haven't personally seen one fail unless the pump failed and trashed the rack.

The rack just failed in the Trans Sport last week :( . $684 later I have a new rack in it and the car feels brand new. Rack failures seem to be the "in" thing right now.

I wouldn't bother rebuilding a rack. As I found out, even the parts house that rebuilt my GM rack didn't achieve a high quality result. The dealer replaced my rack at 69k miles with a reman, which had lots of on center slop. I pulled this rack and installed a magnasteer rack at 72k miles. The magnasteer rack had 73k on it, and I'm having problems with it as well. Even after I power bled air from the system using vacuum evacuation, the rack is giving chattering steering, and I replaced the pump (twice) with new remans to verify this wasn't the problem. Unless the small amount of air that could possibly be left in the system is causing this whole problem and it'* going to disappear in the next few hundred miles, I'll be doing a rack again next week. I drove my friend'* new 99 Grand Prix SE the other day, which has 115k miles on it. It has a non magnasteer rack in it, and surprise surprise, it has lots of slop in the center of the travel. I wish I could convert my car to take a 30 year old recirculating ball gear box -- it would be tighter and less hassle than the GM racks I've been coming across.
