Default rear view mirror auto dim feature

i think this is a problem for a lot of bonnevilles, as it does the exact same thing in my parents 97 ssei. i have a 95 ssei, and it just had a new hud windshield put in, so the mirror had to be taken off. when i bought the car, the wire for the auto dim on the rear view mirror wasnt connected. i connected it, and have still not got it to work. is there some sort of calibration for this? the switch is supposed to light up orange i know, but i got nutin. i have not gone as far as to test the wire for power yet? anyone got a guess?

tested the wire coming out of the ceiling that connects to the mirror. nothing at all... i dont exactly know what one was positive and negative, so i checked em all... this wire should have power, or does it only activate when its dark out? do i have to test this at night?
