Your adjusters may be shot. Or the little thing that moves the adjuster may be bent or something like that. You can adjust the brakes yourself before you put the drum back on.

The hardware in your drums may be going bad. Sometimes you have to rebuild the drums with new springs, adjusters, actuators, etc.
I know that one of my adjsuters was not working right because the little arm that turned it would not make contact with the gear anymore.

Not much - I would think $30 for a new set of springs and adjusters, etc. You want to try to find a kit that allows you to rebuild the brake.
The other thing you can do is just replace individual parts, like the adjuster or the adjuster actuator or a spring.
No, I don't have any of the instant messengers!

I found these on Autobarn.com. I imagine one of them is the springs, and one of them is the adjusters.
BRAKE SELF ADJUSTING REPAIR KIT
CARLSON H2644 SELF ADJUSTER REPAIR KIT
Note: self adjusting repair; rear; 225 x 45 drum $16.12
BRAKE DRUM HARDWARE KIT
CARLSON H7287 DRUM HARDWARE KIT
Note: drum all-in-one kit; rear; 225 x 45 drum $11.39
You should be able to get them anywhere. Remember that working on drums can be a pain! Make sure you have a good repair manual. You may also need a special tool, like a spanner.
