'95 SE steering problem .... update... fixed now
My neighbor has a '95 SE ( SLE )
When driving down the road, the car drives straight.
If you hit the brakes normally or otherwise, the whole car will kick to the left. When it does this, if you just let the steering wheel go where it wants, the car will only move a little bit, but the wheel will turn slightly more then 1/8th to the right.
I don't think that a caliper is sticking, If you are going 60 MPH and hit the brakes to slow down to about 40 MPH, it dues just as described above. However, the wheel will stay turned untill you hit the gas again to accelerate, then it seems to "pop" back into position and sway the car again.
We just replaced both front outer tie rod ends, pads, and rotors.
Motor mounts are bad, not any worse then mine though ( some NEBFers will remember )
We put the car in drive and reverse, applied the brakes, gave it some gas.... both tires didn't seem to move much, if at all in relationship to the wheel well opening.
While in park, moving the wheel back and forth, the steering rack, and all tie rods seem fine, and both tires move as they should with the steering wheel.
I am thinking either ball joints or control arm bushings. I can't think of anything else it could be, so I figured I would check with you guys for any other ideas or a confirmation of my suspicions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Ryan

Bad ball joints will definitely show play in the wheel, but I'd imagine if they were that bad the car wouldn't drive straight as you describe. Mine sure didn't when my ball joints were failing.
It sounds like a brake issue to me too. :? I had a similar issue over a week ago, sometimes when I'd brake the car would drift to the left. The caliper on the left was a couple months old, but the right one was original. I replaced the remaining caliper last week, and did new rotors/pads. So far so good. My front brake hoses are new as well.
