Default Wind shields pits

I was looking closely at the windshield on my '99 SLE... it has more tiny craters than the moon.

Any suggestions, besides replacing the glass?

I had asked a windshield repair shop a while back if the chip repair that they do could take care of all those little ones that show up over time. The answer I got was no...so, based on that one answer, it would appear as if replacement is the only way.
