I had a problem recently with my 95 Bonneville and I was going to post to this forum to ask some advice. However, I used the search function first and found the solution. So I have nothing to post except to say thanks to all of the other people who’ve posted their problems and solutions.

In case anyone is interested, my problem turned out to be a dying battery. The battery was 6+ years old, so it was due. Not only was this site helpful in diagnosing the problem, but I also saved money in the solution. Several people mentioned buying a new battery at Wal-Mart. Call it brain fade, but I never thought to buy a battery at Walmart. They have great prices. The new battery cost me $59 and after 20 minutes to install, the Bonneville was running great. Now I have to see where I wrote down the security code to unlock the radio.

The dealer can help you if necessary with the unlock code. Make sure you have a copy of your title or registration showing your name (Have ID ready) and the VIN number.

Keep a sharp eye on your alternator. Weak batteries have a habit of stressing alternators, and we typically suggest changing them in pairs when the time comes.

Good point on the radio. my brother'* was locked by the previous owner, so, when ever he'd disconnect the battery, he had to go to the dealer to have the radio unlocked. I forget if it was 35, or 45 bucks, but the worst part is, they never clear the code...they just unlock the radio. So, he had to pay every time. He soon got sick of that, and took the radio out and bought a Kenwood, or something.

This will happen if you forget your own code, or, if the previous owner forgot their code, and therefore can't help you out either.

I think this is a crappy policy. Maybe some dealers would do it for free the next time, but this local dealer.....like many...... are in it to make money..

Thanks for the response. What'* the best way to monitor the alternator. Should I just keep checking the dash gauge?
