tranny clunks
95 SSE 185,000
I've got some problems with my tranny. Or something in the drive train. When the car is Idleing the tranny makes a whining scratching sound, but it'* rythmic. Sort of like this... Whine 1,2,3, whine 1,2,3, whine 1,2,3, etc. I put a stethescope to it yesterday and it sounded like a rock tumbler. When I get going the whine is in step with the RPMs but once I get going about 30 Then it quites.
If I step on it from a standstill going straight, or especially turning left, the tranny slips and then reingages with an enormous CLUNK.
The good thing is once it'* up to speed it shifts fine up and down the gears.
Is this somthing reletivley "simple" ? Worth having a tranny shop dig around in it. Or should I just run it til it pukes and then replace the whole tranny?

Mine had 116k miles and was making whining noises like that when it blew up last night. i drove an hour to get home and around the block from my house i pulled out from a stopped sign and it revved up and then clunked into gear, (& out & in & out)by the time i got to my driveway and waited for the garage to open with my foot on the brake, it was gone. (with much whining and scratching noise) I went to pull in and satrted coasting backwards, (Driveway on incline), in any gear. had it towed this morning to the dealer who said it was toasted! I am getting the ASG 4T60-E HD performance transaxle from www.domesticperformance.com. from what they tell me, this will never happen again!
ps. it only started acting up 4 days before it was completey spent. I had an appointment with the dealer today anyway to get the dash cluster replaced, so i was planning on asking them to 'diagnose' the tranny while they had it. it never made it..:(

When the bands let go, it'* over. The whining you are hearing is the clutch paks trying to get you in gear. The torque converter is probably shot, which accounts for the slip/bang that you are getting. Once the TC goes, it usually takes a couple of shifts for the bands to let go and the whole shebang comes apart on the inside like something in a food processor. My 87'* tranny went like this. I made it home in 2 gear only.

Yeah I figured there wasn't much fixing to this. She'* been doing this for about 3000 miles or so. The old girl just doesn't want to give in. I've been babying it so hopfully she'll last until I find a good deal on a replacement. I know I guy that has replaced several of these. He said he could find a replacement and put it in for around $800. The only problem is he isn't the fastest guy on the planet, but it sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Mine let go at 99873 mi. Got new bands, diff pin had been snapped for a long time (rapid clicking when accelerating in a corner), and the torque convertor finally went and it all came to a rather soundless halt. $1500
