Backfiring when starting, will barely run
Hi Guys new to the site and heres my first problem. the cars a 93 SSE. When trying to start it, its starts backfiring seemingly through the intake. The car wont run unless you have your foot on the gas. The battery seems questionable so tomorrow I am going to get another. The car was running fine when I last parked it. Went to start it to go to work and thats when this started. I have done some searches but I have not found anyone that has/had a similar issue. Please help!

No, no codes. That whats sucks. The battery has been giving me some issues though. The charger says it has a bad cell. It seems unlikely, but i've seen weirder things happen. It is safe to presume that the cam and crank sensors are OK simply because it will run? What about the coils and ignition module?
If it is a vac leak, how can I find it while the car is barely running??
Thanks.....

cars got about 170k. Bought it brand spankin new. The only real problem with the car was the tranny at about 100k. I checked the local yard today thinking the same thing and they will sell me an icm with the coils for $75. Sound OK?
I'd really like to give the car to my mom for the winter(just the winter), as she currently has a SSR and I can only imagine how that will handle New England weather.

A bad battery, or cable connection / ground could be causing the problem. The first thing you check next is all the electrical sensor and Icm connectors, I have even seen a dirty computer harness pin cause this. The possibilities are endless.
Do you have an Ohm meter to check the coils, or check for spark at each cylinder.

Dam crazy I tell you. I put a ICM out of another running car and now its doing something different. Now as soon as the engine fires off, it races to 3000 rpm and them dies flat. Try to restart in and the same thing happens again???????

Sounds like you may need it scanned while running to see whats going on. Or you may just have another bad ICM or coil. I assume it did not backfire this time?
Also try this: remove the idle air control valve and clean it as well as the MAF. Because you did backfire you should also check the operation of the TPS and that the voltage is set correctly.
Guess unless it is scanned you are going to go through a lot of trial and error.
