Yes, it'* the same engine as used in the Bonnevilles, the L36. And yes, they are subject to the same Upper Intake failures AND Lower Intake gasket failures!
What failed on your Lumina? The Upper Intake or the Lower Gaskets? Many of us 99 owners have witnessed the actually Upper Intakes not failing, but the Lower Intakes just degrading very severly.
And when you do (or have) the gaskets and/or Upper Intake replaced, get that 90* by-pass elbow replaced between the Lower Intake and Belt Tensioner. It'* good $7 insurance for something that will most likely fail in the future!

well the my bonneville just died suddenly, oil pump, i think there is more to it than that, i've been told the 3800 engines are a good strong mill. anyhow i bought a 99 lumina cop car with a 3800 series ii in it, it has around 280,000 klm, but runs like new, i started it up on a cold day at the dealer, it was a trade in, and it was a cold day, in the -2 or so, and it was quiet as a mouse, and let it warm up, rev it, no smoke out the exuasht or carbon, it hass dual exausts on it, wierd, anyhow i just have herd stories and problems with the intake, and wanted to know if i was going to be in for a surprise, i know it'* not a bonnie, but it'* running the same mill as alot of you guys with the NA engine. Man i am gunna miss my bonnie big time, the difference in cars is just stupid, but i have kids, i live in canada, and it'* cold!! plus i can't rely on my buddy to keep picking me up at 6 am everymorning forever, so i will be picking it up on the 27-28 of dec. it has abs light on and engine light though, but it is obd ii so i guess i have to get it scanned by a shop right? or some scan tool that is obd ii compliant.??

You can actually have your car scanned for free by AutoZone. The OBD II testers are common. Also, check out the tech info for someone who may live near you with an OBD II scanner.
